Atlampa Parking Garage - More than Parking

One of the most urgent issues of contemporary cities is transportation. What cannot be covered by public transport is supplemented by cars. However the lack of dedicated parking spaces complicates the traffic, unnecessarily increases the amount of cars commuting and the pollution of the urban environment. Among the established solutions of this issue are multi storey parking garages. Our project proposes a parking garage, with extensive green elements to offset car pollution, various public and commercial functions and distinctively urban character, which has potential to activate the neighborhood and become a valuable addition to the surroundings.

The proposal is located in Atlampa, a vibrant up-and- coming district of Mexico City going through rapid development. While custom-fitted into the existing urban grid, the design could be modified to be placed in various locations which we illustrate on three examples. As envisoned by the master plan, the locations are directly adjacent to emerging prominent green pedestrian zones. In reaction to this vision, our proposal is a synergy of green spaces, lively pedestrian zone and utilitarian indoor parking.

The ramping concrete structure of the garage provides both highly efficient and comfortable opportunities for parking and can be scaled up or down depending on the particular requirements.

The ground level of the structure includes spacious and well-lit interiors, dedicated to cafes, restaurants, shops, co-working, dance clubs or similar commercial & social functions. Accessing both the surrounding vibrant streetlife and the secure green environment of a courtyard, those sought after spaces transform the object from mere parking garage to an urban hot spot.

Commercial and public functions are not limited to the ground level, but also appear on the roof of the building. Due to their versatility, two glazed pavilions with stunning views on Mexico City can provide space for various programs: luxury restaurants, bars, sport and fitness facilities or more community oriented functions like youth centers or educational facilities. The football field and the roof gardens offer additional reasons to visit the rooftop.

The most iconic feature of the design is a green facade of the building. Attached to the main concrete structure, the lightweight system of walkways and nets wraps the building into rich green cover, which provides shadow, adds to urban biodiversity and offsets the negative effects of car transportation. Plants, climbing both up the net from the ground and down the net from the planters of the roof, transform the industrial look of the parking structure to an element of wild nature in the center of the urban environment.
